In 1786, Virginians called a convention in Annapolis to discuss problems with the protectionist trade barriers each state had erected. The colonists did not like this, because the colonies were more independent than they are now and they did not want the big, centralized government to decide how they were able to trade and who they were able to trade with. They also wanted to broaden their trade, to not only do commercial trade, but bigger trade.
