Carthage was a leader of trade and leadership. It was also the only city located near the Majardah River, Tunisia's only river to flow all year long. Many new cities replaced Carthage once it was taken over. It grew to be the second largest city in the western half of the Western Empire and was the center of the Roman Province in Africa. It was equally an early center for Christianity.
