The U.S. started to produce Springfield muskets with longer barrels that allowed the rebels to fire at longer ranges (almost 150 more meters than the British) which allowed the U.S. to fire on British redcoats from much longer ranges, and then leave the battlefield before the British could get in range and fire back.
