What was the main reason that the birth rate in America declined during the Great Depression? Husbands who were laid-off and couldn't find jobs abandoned their wives. Couples decided not to have children until they could had more economic stability. Wives had to go out to earn a living and were unable to care for a baby. Couples under economic strain were contemplating getting a divorce, not starting a family.

The main reason (or one of the main reasons) why the birth rate in America declined during the Great Depression was because "Couples decided not to have children until they could had more economic stability."
