The science of classification of living organisms is called as Taxonomy. Genetic and physical evidence are primarily used to classify organisms.

Genetic evidence includes the genetic profile of the organisms. These are related to the functions performed by the organism. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) is the genetic material which carries information from one generation to the next. Similarities in the DNA sequences suggest how closely the two organisms are related.

Physical evidence includes the physical characteristics which are manifested by the organism. They are also called morphological forms of the organism. More the similarities in the physical appearance of organisms, more closely they are related to each other.
