The purpose  is to influance the way her poems are read and understood. The dashes are used as to pause, to cause reflection, but also give the word strength. Exclamation points are used at the end of the verses where you can here ones overwhelmed by what one said. The commas are used as a description of one incomplete thought and confustion as they break down from one deep thought to another deep thought. I hope this helped.
