Why was there a high rate of illiteracy among slaves?

Their "owners" didn't believe that literacy was an important skill for people who were just going to do physical work, and that it would be pointless and a waste to teach them to read. Also, leaving their slaves illiterate put the "owners" at an advantage. They wouldn't know if you lied to them about what something that was written said, like a law.
