To what extent was the American Revolution a radical break with the past and to what extent was it a conservative attempt to preserve the status quo?

The American Revolution was a radical break with the past in the sense that no colony had ever overthrown its colonizing power before, and independence was considered almost impossible. It preserved the status quo in that the Americans actually adopted a form of government that was very similar to the British.
