Why was slavery important to the economy in the South before the Civil War? It was forbidden for white people to do work in the South. There was a shortage of laborers, and the South needed as many workers as possible. The economy was mainly agricultural and needed many people to work in the fields. The economy was mainly industrial and needed many people to work in factories.

Well South depended on slavery for life. They needed somone to pick cotton (cotton was very inportant in the South) they needed someone to labor and so on. They also thought that black people who were slaves, where a lower class group of people.

That's the most information I can give you because that question has been unanswered or hard to answer for 40 years! No joke.
