They sent 13,000 federal troops into western Pennsylvania in order to suppress a local rebellion against the excise tax on whiskey. The sending of federal troops can only be interpreted as the federal government asserting its authority, and this has been seen many times in American history like the Nullification Crisis, the Pullman Strike, and the Reconstruction Act.
