They fought in the Civil War, they were the South's main soldiers. Most of the South had used slaves as soldiers. Before that, they farmed cash crops like cotton and sugar cane.

Slavery played an absolutely crucial role in the southern economy, which was almost entirely agrarian. This is why the South refused to give up slavery because they were so dependent on it.
