D. Germany. Germany was divided into an Eastern and Western Germany. Moreover, the Western side of Germany was a republic and supported by numerous Western democracies such as France, Britain, and the United States. Their relationship advanced when West Germany was admitted to NATO; however, East Germany was a satellite state of the Soviet Union and participated in the Warsaw Pact, which was opposed to NATO.
