Why did the European colonial powers engage in a number of different ways of colonialism? What did they gain by these different methods?

During the colonial "rush" in the 19th century, European countries different widly in the rules because they were ruled differently themselves, such as the Dutch vs. the British etc. The harsher rulers tended to gain more resources than the more leiniant ones.
