Santorio Santorio invented the first recorded thermometer in 1612. Galileo invented the thermometer’s predecessor, the thermoscope, in 1596. What is the difference between these two devices?

The thermoscope didn’t measure temperature differences. I got it from Study Island.

The main difference between these two devices is that the thermoscope is basically a thermometer without the scale of numbers telling you specifically the temperature. It shows the rise of heat by the rise of the liquid in the tube, and the lack of heat by the small number of liquid in the tube, the exact method the thermometer uses to let you know about the temperature, without the numbers. Santorio Santorio is often known as introducing the quantitative approach to medicine and we can link this to his work with the thermometer.
