the way to approach this is to find some number that aren't fractions.
If we convert the yards to inches (36 inches in a yard), we have dimensions of 27in (3/4 of 36) by 18 (1/2 of 36). then you can multiply the sides to find the final area... in this case:
27 x 18 = 486 square inches.
