The Civil War in America began in South Carolina when the Confederate Army bombarded Union troops in Fort Sumter on 12 April 1861. The attack was led by Brigadier General Beauregard, while the commander of the Union troops in the fort was Major Robert Anderson. The fortress was built as part of 'detached forts' systems, as well as military post offices and coastal garrison for the defense of the United States main ports.
