Why is the year 622 important to muslims

It was in 622 that the Prophet Muhammad completed his "Hegira" -- when, to escape being persecuted, he fled from Mecca to Medina. It was in Medina that Muhammad started attracting followers to his religion of Islam. The Hegira, at a later stage, was the day that marked the beginning of the Muslim calendar.
