Why is discovering character’s motivations in literature important?

Many times, discovering characters motivations is the whole point of the work. When we know why characters behave the way they do, it changes the way we perceive the characters. We may disagree with the charactres' actions, but if we understand the reasons behind the actions, we may become sympathetic to them.
