How did the jamestown settlers avoid starvation

After John Smith left, the Natives relationship with them changed and the natives did not like them anymore. So then they had to build a wall to protect themselves. But soon enough John Ralfe discovered tobacco seeds and began to grow tobacco and taught all the other villagers how to plant it also.

They made farms and build good wells for their own risk but things went down at the end because the town disappeared.
