Why are some elements stable on their own while others are more stable in compounds

Answer:The number of electrons in the outermost shell of an atom determines it reactivity. Noble gasses have low reactivity because they have full electrons shells. Halogens are highly reactive because they readily gain an electron to fill their outer most shell.
