Energy is lost as it is transferred between ecosystem trophic levels; the efficiency of this energy transfer is measured by NPE and TLTE.

Very inefficient. Almost 90% of all energy is lost between trophic levels. That is why larger animals need to eat more, because less energy is being consumed.
