Sunni Muslims believe that the caliph or leader of the Islamic faith is to be chosen by the Ummah or Muslim community through consensus building and therefore following Muhammad's death the next in line to lead was Abu Bakr. Whereas the Shi'a believe that Ali who was married to Muhammad's daughter was the rightful leader and his descendants would lead after this. This schism continues to play out today.
