During photosynthesis, bright sunlight is converted into useful chemical energy inside the plant in the stroma. This energy can then be used to convert CO2 and water into sugars. The conversion of simple molecules into complex molecules also happens in the stroma but it can happen in darkness as long as there is already energy obtained from sunlight.
