The Enlightenment influenced the formation of the United States in at least two points:
1. Motivation for independence: the idea of getting rid of a centralizing government as it was under English rule was instrumental in provoking the first independence movements.
2. Formation of a Lay State: the division between Church and State is also the fruit of this Enlightenment thought, which saw in reason the basis for official measures.
