A charter for the southern section is given to a company of London merchants (called the London Company, until its successful colony causes it be known as the Virginia Company). A company based in Plymouth is granted a similar charter for the northern part of this long coastline, which as yet has no European settlers.

The Colonial Leaders were very important for the development of the English Colonies. Some of them were the responsible for the survival of the Colony, for example, John Smith was appointed by the London Company to be on the Colony’s council and he was the responsible for saving the colony of Jamestown from famine and disease.

Also, the Colonial leaders were responsible for creating a place free of religious persecution which made possible for the colonies to develop.
