The Fugitive Slave Law that was part of the Compromise of 1850 cause a great stir in the North because it require all citizens to aid in the capture and return of runaway slaves. Many Northerners wanted to help slaves escape rather than help catch them.Jan 8, 2016

It allowed slave catchers to come into the North and bring back escaped slaves.
