A memoir, by definition, is "a historical account or biography written from personal knowledge or special sources." Alternatively, "an autobiography, or memoir, is considered a principally nonfiction work, a logging of actual events, which may deviate from objectivity according to a writer's memory of things." Anne Frank's diary is one of the most powerful memoirs of the Holocaust.

Its a memoir because its a personal accounting of a historical event, person or thing instead of the authors whole life story like an autobiography, or a second hand account by someone else like a biography
