Please help, been asking a while. In the past, what circumstances led to a president of the U.S. serving more than two terms

franklin d. roosevelt is one president that served three full terms--he was elected for a fourth, but died a few months after he got into office. at the time, there wasn't a term limit for presidency, so presidents could serve term after term if they so wished.
