Lung tissue and other autopsy material were saved from some soldiers who died from the Spanish Flu in 1918. Scientists today are able to study the materials with more advanced technology. They discovered the flu affected both the upper and lower respiratory tract. Scientists discovered similar traits as the 2009 influenza pandemic which obviously was not as deadly. This was probably due to the living conditions and medical treatment available.
