Plantation owners thought they needed slaves because big lands required a lot of labor. Slavery was a way in which plantation owners could get cheap labor, since they viewed slaves as an asset. According to Engerman and Sokollof, whenever there were bigger extensions of land, slavery was more likely since it was more effective. However, when the extensions of land were small other institutions were adopted.
