The answer is: They are in different tenses.

The verb “to escape” means to get away. It is a verb, and as such it can be conjugated in as many tenses as the English language allows. In the present tense, the verb would acquire an “ing” ending to express the action taking place in the present. In the past tense, the verb would acquire an “ed” ending to express the action taking place in the past.
