Janette is an older woman serving as maid and declares that she should reject both offers - that nothing is worse than a loveless home. Janette comes from a worse economic background, but found harmony and joy through working through social causes that brings happiness and fulfillment. Laura went on to accept one of the offers and finds out that her marriage was not one of fulfillment and that it became a loveless relationship.
