Water is absorbed from the plant's roots and carbon dioxide from their leaves. Light energy turns these substances into glucose (and oxygen as a by-product which the plant releases). Some glucose is used to help respiration whilst the rest is turned to insoluble starch, used for storage. This starch can be turned back to glucose and also used for respiration.
