basically, the more slaves you had in your area, the more power you had in the government b/c the number of votes your state got was based on how big or small you population was. This idea caused things like the whole "Bleeding Kansas" fiasco where people were killing and running each other off of land so the state could be a slave state and slave-holding states would have more power. There was literally a preacher who bought and handed out guns so his parishioners could defend themselves.
