The nitrogen is present in the earth atmosphere for about 78%. The plants cannot directly absorb atmospheric nitrogen instead they are capable of absorbing and utilizing the compounds of nitrogen such as ammonia, nitrates and nitrites. The atmospheric nitrogen is absorbed and fix in the soil by soil bacteria into compounds of nitrogen which can be easily absorbed by the plant roots from the soil.
