How can role models shape a person's character?

depending on the age of a person a role model can cast an image for a little guy or girl to look up too (it works for adults as well) and depending on the personality or traits of this role model you can expect to same positive and negative traits of the person show up in the person looking up to this role model

to put it simply, humans are a monkey see, monkey do kind of animal most of the tme. therefore, if we have a role model, we simply take after them. we look up to them and try to imitate.
