The story takes place in the 19th century in Padua, a major city in Italy. Most or the setting takes place in a garden cultivated by dr. Giacomo Rappaccini and his daughter, Beatrice, and in an apartment with the view outlining the garden. The occupant of the apartment is Giovanni Guasonti , medical student at the University of Padua. Other scenes also takes place on the streets of Padua and at the university , where Guasconti meets a professor of medicine. The university , founder in 1222, maintains Europe oldest botanical garden, established in 1545.
