The weather forecaster predicted heavy rain and flooding. However, only a few clouds passed over, causing it to sprinkle. “That was sure a big downpour,” a radio commentator noted. Which literary device did the author use in the passage?

The author used verbal irony. What he said was different from what he meant, as it obviously was far from the downpour he described.

Step-by-step explanation:

Although the prediction was one of heavy rain, there was no heavy rain and no flooding. Even so, the commentator talked as if there was one knowing that there wasn't.

By definition, irony is "the expression of one's meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect."

Answer:

The answer is Irony
