At the beginning you have 2 fractions.
You need to find a common denominator, so that would be 12. Your new equation would be

So first you add 1/3 and 1/4 by getting the same denominator and cross multiplying, so you get 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12
Then you do 12 - 7 = 5, so this answer is 5/12. I don't believe you can simplify because 5 is a prime number
