It can be rightly pointed out that around 900 AD, the relations between the Hindus and Muslims were mainly based on trade. Later, when some Hindus started adopting the Muslim religion, armed conflicts began and relations started deteriorating. After the partition of India by the British, the relation soured further but it has to be also pointed out that there are several Muslims still living peacefully in India where the Hindus are the majority.
