This would have to be true.

During presidential elections, the popular votes (chosen by the people) doesn't count. The Electoral College actually decides on who will be the next President of the United States.

For example, the 2016 presidential election. Donald Trump won the election by having a total of 290 electoral votes.

In conclusion, whichever candidate has a total of 270 or more electoral votes, he/she will be the next President of the United States.
