What was Washington Irving's view on marriage in the story Rip Van Winkle?

I think that Washington Irving's views on marriage as seen through the eyes of his character Rip Van Winkle is that a man needs to listen to his wife and do the necessary  household chores in order to have a good marriage. It is not morally acceptable to entertain the other women in his town and children and ignore his own family.
