These and other Hindu literature classified the society in principle into four varnas: the Brahmins: priests, scholars and teachers. the Kshatriyas: rulers, warriors and administrators. the Vaishyas: cattle herders, agriculturists, artisans and merchants. the Shudras: laborers and service providers.
