How might mercantilism have encouraged colonial expansion abroad

Mercantilism is a theory that makes countries powerful if they are rich. They expand their territory abroad in hoes of finding abundant resources from neighboring lands. Mercantilism was also focused on maximizing exports and minimizing imports. So, the richer the country is, the more exports they would make. As a result, it would encourage colonial expansion abroad.
