I believe the answer is: C. Middle passage

Middle passage refers to the path on the sea which is used by slave ships from West Africa to the West Indies.

Since the route that the ships must pass is very long, the slaves have to endure excruciatingly inhumane treatment, including daily beatings, unsanitary place, not given enough food and drinks and forced to work as labour to move the ships.
