What is the value of the x variable in the solution to the following system of equations?

4x + 2y = 12
x – y = 3

Multiply the bottom equation by 2 and you'll get

4x + 2y = 12
2x - 2y = 6

Then combine the two equations and the y's will cancel out and you'll get

6x = 18

Divide by 6.

x = 3
