How do the endoplasmic reticulum and ribosomes work together

Ribosomes attached to the rough endoplasmic reticulum produce the proteins that are expelled either to the plasma membrane, or for organelles, or outside the cell altogether. The "free ribosomes" (i.e. not attached to rough ER) produce the proteins that stay inside the cell.
