so complimentary angles add to make 90 so
x+y=90
x=first angle
y=second angle
y=20+x
subsitute y=20+x for y in x+y=90
x+(20+x)=90
x+20+x=90
add like terms
2x+20=90
subtract 20 from both sides
2x=70
divide both sides by 2
x=35
first angle=35
y=x+20
y=35+20
y=55

55+35=90
