He had been convicted of treason and sabotage in the so-called Rivonia trial. He was previously convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state. Hope this helps.

Both case related to the efforts that Mandela and his allies made in order to erase apartheid (similar to racial segregation ) in south Africa. Even though the prosecutors did not have enough proof, they were sentenced to be in prison for the rest of their life.
