Why might it have been more difficult for absolutism to take hold in central europe than in western europe?

it's because Central Europe is more geographically dived than Western Europe.
Geographical division affect the way culture and influence spread from one region to region. Countries that more separated by geographical division tend to has less influence with another country (because no interaction made due to impossibility in passing the geographical barrier) which means that it is possible to seclude all the people with this region with an absolute control such as absolutism.
